It can be used towards anything except for the phone bill k think. We used ours towards the taxes and phone price.

If you credit is good you ( I did ) get zero interest rate and stretched it out for 30 months and it is only $24.67 on the Next plan. I used the $200 gift card for a new phone card and taxes. There is still money left on the card after that too !

I believe you can pay off the installment at anytime, each month's bill show's the installment balance/payoff amount so you can pay it off or keep doing it monthly. I don't think there is a benefit to paying off the installments at the time of purchase, if you may get a better deal just buying the phone out right (unless you really want the gift card I suppose). As for the gift card, it is an actual gift card. You can use it however you like. I used mine to pay for the tax on the phone (yes the same one I just activated to get the gift card), bought some BEATS headphones and a gift card to taco bell!
