they give you a 200 us $ off when you activate it with one of the company they offer. if you buy your phone unlocked you can use it in another country. if you are financing you will have to pay the whole amount before using it in another country.

I travel for work. Just buy a SIM card in any country and viola....I have phone service. The difference in price because American phone carriers give you a price break (lower) off the cost of the phone for you to sign a 2-3 yr contract with them at a much higher price.

I chose to ship it to my house and just put my own Sim card in for my present carrier. It turned out to be only a $10 difference. And they didn't have the phone in stock anyway.
