I'm going to say no the putting cash down to make smaller monthly payments. You could just pay the carrier a bit more each month. As far as trade in current phone, it depends on if the carrier or retailer has that promo going. I was going to do that but I had a Galaxy 6 and the oldest phone acceptable was the Galaxy 7.
