No, not at all. This pencil like tool is called the S-pen. It has a storage space inside the phone so it's always there, but you never have to use it. The s-pen adds a lot of unique functionality to the S23 ultra. You can use it as a remote control for the camera, you can hover over the screen to extend menus in the web browser, use it to write and erase notes, make precise edits to photos or videos and tons of other things. But ultimately, no, the phone does not require you to use it for anything.
