I purchased an AT&T phone at BestBuy and I use it on Cricket Wireless. No unlocking necessary because AT&T owns Cricket... Don't know if this is helpful, but I hope so :)

Yes your carrier is required by law to unlock your phone if you want . But the other company that your moving to must use a sim card in other works they must be gsm phones

ATT will unlock this phone at the completion of your contract (att next contract ends when you pay it off). After which it will be compatible with ANY gsm carrier the phone has the bands for (which should be all of them. Any CDMA only carriers will NOT work, GSM basically means you have a sim card, CDMA means the equivalent is permanently soldered inside and it is ONLY that kind of phone forever. If you have a sim card that fits and has service attached to it, and your phone is unlocked 99.9% chance it will work fine.
