“Specs say this soundbar has DTS Virtual:X surround sound. Sounds like additional speakers are needed to get surround sound. Some speakers create Dolby Atmos & DTS:X from the soundbar and sub woofer. Are additional speakers needed for surround sound?”

For true surround sound you are correct. This system simulates it and at times does so quite well. Overall sound quality is very good.
