“Can I run this as an extra display from a MacBook Pro with only the USB-c port? Or do I have to use thunderbolt?”

I am using this with a MacBook Air, with a cable to the USB port. This even powers the MacBook from the monitor, and leaves the HDMI open for another device. It also leaves a spare USB C port on the MacBook for a hub or other devices.

To be Honest the monitor is good but is limited on connectivity: Number of USB Ports (Total) 1 USB Ports 1 x USB-C 3.0 It does not say it on some spec sheets, it has regular HDMI. I use display port to hdmi cables is working like a charm. if you could get a docking station that would help you alot, you could use any available connections.
