Works automatically to back up using Apple Time Machine.   First back up takes several minutes.  Successive versions back up quickly.

It is simply an external drive like any other. Software makes backups happen on schedule.
One Mac tip: Time Machine on a recent macOS will reformat the drive for exclusive use by Time Machine. No manual copies unless you format it as 2 volumes first.
