“Can this drive be used vertically - on its edge rather than flat on the table? Does it come with some kind of base that ensures it is stable in that position? If used flat, can another identical drive be stacked on top of it?”

There is no base for vertical, I wouldn't recommend it. I'm not sure but think it will be alright to stack another drive when flat.
