“Can this be used to download pictures from an iPhone? Thinking of getting a new phone and sometimes all of the pictures don’t transfer to the new device or if something happens to the phone they are gone”

Not only the flash drive, you need a computer desktop or laptop to transfer your pictures from phone to the computer and then you can save them all on the flash drive for future needs !
