“I've had this drive for a couple of years and suddenly upon trying to back up my files, it says " the disk is write-protected". I tried formatting it but still got the same error message. Do you know what the problem is? I will appreciate your advice.”

No, you haven’t. This is the 256Gb, it’s only been available since last year. Yes, I know what the problem is.
