• It can be. Both password protection and encryption are managed by software. I've not used any SanDisk software for this, as I use Microsoft solutions, but the file format written to it can be managed by such software.

• The device comes with software on it to allow you to password protect your data. I have not used this feature very much so far to be able to say how well it is protected.

• I don't think so. I didn't have a password when I transfer my pictures almost 400 pictures.
