• Yes, it's backward compatible with older machines that don't yet support usb 3.0 speeds. The disk just doesn't perform as fast as it would with a newer computer.

• I believe it is if you format it as "xFat" which should be an option when you choose to format.Be sure to copy and paste any backup software that may have come with the Drive so you can use it later Do this before you format because a format will erase everything currently on the drive.
