USB 2.0 backup then plug into 3.0 I want to download movies off of my computer. It only has the 2.0, but then I want to view it on my TV which has a 3.0 interface. Will it play at the faster speed or will it be at the 2.0 rate that it was backed up on?

As an old IT networking guy for many years it is my opinion that you will be downloading from your computer at the USB 2.0 speeds(weakest link=slowest speed) but if both your interfaces(flash drive and tv) are 3.0 then they will be accessing it at the 3.0 speed.

The speed is determined by the USB port interface. If plugged into a USB 2.0 port then it will read/write at USB 2.0 speeds. When plugged into a USB 3.0 port, then as long as you are using a USB 3 flash drive, it will read/write at USB 3 speeds.

When you transfer the movie files from your computer to the USB drive it will be slow at the USB 2.0 rate, but once you connect the USB drive to your TV it will be at the faster USB 3.0 rate.

I think it works like this. You download the movies. Since it is 2.0 it will take a little longer. Once the movies reside on the drive, they are nothing but data (0's and 1's). Once you plug the 3.0 drive into a compatible 3.0 the transfer rate should be at the highest speed (provided they are both 3.0). The transfer rate is device specific not data specific?

Whatever device the USB drive is attached to will dictate the USB 1, 2 or 3.0 transfer speeds. The device is compatible with all. Data access is dependent on the attached devices protocol, the drive is good up its maximum rated USB 3.0 rated speed.

If this device is connected to a 3.0 USB compliant port it will provide speeds equal to that of USB 3.0 specs.
