It depends on the environment. If it is a quiet environment you could get a bit further than if it's a slightly noisy, or noisy environment. You could be within 10-15 ft of the microphone and still get a good sound as long as you are projecting your voice and it's not very noisy. But with microphones proximity is everything so you want to be as close as you can to get the best most full sound. As you get further away from the microphone you lose a lot of the bass, or lower end of the vocal. I hope my long answer does not confuse, but there is no short answer to that question.
