It only has 1 thunderbolt port so it depends on how many HDMI and thunderbolt ports the Mac mini your are using has. If you have 1 HDMI and 2 thunderbolt ports on your Mac mini then you don't really need this for that.

I was able to run my backup hard drive but couldn't use my DVD player through it. It wouldn't recognize it. I also play guitar and have software and the same thing happened. Now to be honest I didn't look into it much. There may be something you can do but I just learned to live without it. What I can say is since you can return it to Best Buy why not try? To buy and apple setup its FAR more money. Wish I could be of more help.
