• Yes, this will work with both Mac and Windows. If you only intend to use with Mac then better to format it once.

• in order to work as advertised (being able to share data between mac and windows) it needs at least MAC OS 10.9. With my OS 10.6.8 it seems to be working to store data (after I reformatted it) but the software than enables mac-windows sharing doesn't work.
