It is small enough to carry with you, however it requires electrical power and not USB. Basically it is designed for backup stationary on your Mac.

I use it for an extra storage drive and NOT a backup, you're given the decision when booting up.

Yes, it can be used simply as a hard drive. When you set it up, it will ask you if you want to use it as a time machine back up or just as a hard drive . I am using mine just has a hard drive by clicking on files and dragging to the icon . Works great with my Apple iMac .
