Under specifications the filter longevity is listed as .5 months, is this filter only good for half of a month? null

Mine lasted 6 months. It says 6-12 months. I run mine all the time on auto and once a month on full for an hour.

Mine lasted 4,000 hours almost a full year with running 24 hours a day on auto.

I would say under normal operation, the filter should last at least 6-8 months. Of course, it all depends upon the environment. I do a decent amount of cooking, and with the puifier set on auto, it seems I will be getting around 6 months. On my second filter now. I'm hoping the second one will last longer due to the first one having to get the living area filtered out of the box. I would say the .5 was a typo, and probably should have read 5 months.
