They do not retract. There is a groove in the band you can press the wire into it you don't want them to hang

The earbuds just dangle, but the cord is not so long that the buds get tangled up.

They just dangle a bit from your neck, they never seem to get in my way, and I wear hooded ect. The only thing I would worry about is sometimes it may get caught on something if you have your upper body close to something. They are really nice and don't give me any problems and for the price , you can't find anything better truthfully.

There is a place for them in the collar. They don't retract, just tuck in.
