In the case you describe, the cord installed was rated for even higher electrical current which means it will handle the 40 amp current of the range without overheating or damaging the cord. There only would be a problem if the range was installed with a cord with a lower amperage rating because that would mean the cord could potentially overheat when operating at the 40 amp operating current of your range. So you should be fine, if anything your cord will be even more safe than the required 40 amp cord.
