No, they now work off just your home's WiFi. You may need a bridge or boost if your WiFi isn't strong enough. To initially setup the speaker you may have to use the provided Ethernet cord to plug into your router. After it's setup you can disconnect and place the speaker anywhere in your house (with an electrical outlet).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No. Sonos can connect to your router without a bridge, however for some configuartions, i.e. a 5:1 Surround setup using multiple speakers you will need a bridge. The Bridge also sets up its own wifi network in effect which means that if you have issues with bandwidth on your network, it can keep songs from dropping etc... The Sonos FAQ page has a deeper discussion on the topic but in most cases you don't "need" a Bridge but it does improve performance.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No, it simply extends the range between other sonos products in your home when wifi range is limited, and creates a more solid connection between them but is not required for use with a Sonos 1 http://www.sonos.com/shop/products/bridge
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Its not necessary to have a bridge to use sonos speaker. Sonos will setup its own network using your home network. That's how i have mine setup. I dont have any experience using the bridge, but guessing the experience might be better.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No. The new sonos are capable of being linked without a bridge
