• The Sonos Play:1 does not have Alexa built in like the Sonos 1 does. You do not need Alexa to operate it either. Rather, you utilize a simple app that you can download on your phone.

• the play one (the newer, more expensive version of this speaker) is the one with alexa built in. this version here will only work with alexa if you set it up through your phone to do so. the speaker itself does not ‘listen’.
