“Does using the headphone jack and/or the (optical) digital audio out cause the tv speakers to deactivate. I was hoping to use these audio output options to connect a sound system, but wanted the tv sound to play as well....not just one or the other.”

You can connect a sound system and should be able to use the analog output jack for headphones, rather than the optical digital audio out.
