• yes, if the power goes out the alarm will run off of the battery

• Yes it can! And we have had to use the battery backup mpre than once so I can vouch for it.

• As far as I have been able to tell the battery backup is for the internal clock system so it doesn't lose its time. The rest of the clock seems to run on normal power.
