No, your blu ray player does not need to be a smart player if you already own a smart tv. "Smart TVs" is a term that has come to denote any tv that can be connected to the Internet to access streaming media services and that can run entertainment apps, such as on-demand video-rental services, Internet music stations and web browsers. If your smart tv can already do all of these things, there is no need for a smart blu ray player, save yourself a few dollars. I'm sure you can find one with 4K up scaling and 3D capabilities.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No you don't need a Smart WI/FI Player, but the Sony 6500 has 4Kupscaling 3D, and WI/FI which i would highly recommend. I have one and it works very well with my Sharp Q+ TV, IT MAKES DVDs look almost like Blueray disks and Blueray look like 1080p also. You will see the upscaling on the sony works realy well on the Samsung plus you will have Smart and WI/FI both on the Blueray and on the TV.The Smart, 3D and WI/FI features on the Sony may work better also. You won't be sorry ! But whatever player you get, make sure it supports 3D!

If you just want to watch movies through streaming, Smart Blu-Ray player is not needed but of course if you want to watch Blu-Ray movies in a Blu-Ray disc, you will need a Blu-Ray player.
