Good questions. I am glad you asked, for I just tried what you asked and yep it works. You'll need to pick the right group: music, movie etc. And it will play fine. I am listening to a mp3 right now and I also checked it out for movies. I was running both off of an external hard drive. The only issue you might have is that it might have an issue with NTFS file format. My hard drive is a 500gig Fat 32 format. You could partition your drive and just format a part of it Fat 32... It may read NTFS... I do not know.
