• It doesn't HAVE to be updated, but it SHOULD be to make sure you're getting the most current configuration and best performance. One of the newest firmware updates is to allow pairing between an external Alexa device and the soundbar .. which works really well! I purchased mine 3 weeks ago, and it needed a firmware update out of the box.

• I updated it via WiFi. The update added alexa feature to it.
