I purchased this receiver last month and have mine setup as you described. Even though the manual for my sub stated that connecting the receiver to the speaker level inputs on the sub is the least desirable connection method, that was the only choice I had with this receiver. I have this setup in my home office to play albums and also stream audio from my mobile phone. Works well for those applications.

Please make sure to check the subwoofer to determine if it has IN and OUT speaker wire connections. If so, connect the left and right speaker wires from the stereo receiver into the left and right speaker IN on the subwoofer. Then, connect speaker wire from the left and right speaker OUT on the subwoofer to the left and right main speakers. If the subwoofer does not have IN and OUT speaker wire connections, then it will not be compatible with the stereo receiver. Hope this helps! Regards, Sam
