Hi John, Thank you for the inquiry! You can connect up to 4 HDMI devices to the AV receiver. If your TV supports HDMI ARC, there's no need to connect optical cable since HDMI ARC output both audio and video. However, if your TV doesn't support HDMI ARC, you need two connections. HDMI cable for video and optical cable for audio. Regards, David
