• Hi there, thank you for inquiring about the WH-1000XM3. The noise canceling feature will still work without playing any audio. Please also note that the noise canceling function works primarily on noise in the low frequency band. Although noise is reduced, it is not completely canceled. Erin

• All? No. But most. I turned mine on with no music and could barely hear me snap my fingers next to my head. Will say I couldn't hear the door being knocked on.
