The noise cancelling, all by itself/without music, is only fair to good (but not great) for reducing typical airplane noises. Although, it's certainly much better when also listening to music, TV, movies, etc..

No, it's not true. I can tell that it is cancelling noise without music. It can be enabled right on the left earpiece.
