“Does this only work if plugged in? Will it power off a laptop?”

• It needs to be plugged in for the ring light to work. If you just want the tripod then no need to plug in. I use a battery pack and an old phone charger to be my power source. Battery pack allows me to not need to be near an outlet.

• You don’t need to plug this product in when you use. The only thing recommend is to bring a portable charger so you can use the light.
