“Since this TV has optical audio out is it possible to use the optical out to send digital audio to an older pre-4K receiver? Looking to replace a very old 1080p LCD TV and use existing Pioneer receiver for 5.1 surround.”

Yes. you can provide an audio signal in this manner just fine. Of course you can't use your RECEIVER for video switching if you want 4k picture, but you can use the audio out from the TV. Alternately it also has an HDMI with ARC so if your older 1080p receiver can at least take an HDMI connection, you could use that as well.
