I have many strands of the strings and icicles. Are the dots better for any certain decorating as co pared to the strings. My question is geared more towards do the dots look better on a Xmas tree or stair Banister or outside porch posts etc. null

Dots are better for use in areas that you don't want an electrical cord. They can be powered with a USB POWER BRICK as well as a usb plug. For example, I have them in my centerpiece on my dining room table. Pictured here.

The dots are slightly larger than the string light with a frosted opaque look. I personally like the way the dots look.

One thing I would note is the wire between the dots is very thin and not well suited to outdoor or rough use. I lost 2 sets this year to broken cables.

I wouldn't recommend the dots for a tree. They're built more along the lines of a standard RGB light strip, and aren't particularly long. They'd probably do better in a wreath where you can hide the cables or installed around a doorframe or mantel.

Since there is only 60 or so, we used them on a mini-tree and another strand behind our wall-mounted TV for ambient light.  
We were thinking of using them to outline the first letter of our last name on a wall, but haven't yet.

It depends a lot on your taste, they are perfect on each of the surfaces you mentioned.
