Finally did my two sets it took about 40 minutes each.

This is the worst thing to update the firmware. I think it depends on the Twinkly app stability, your wi-fi stability, and how many lights in the string. The more lights, the longer it seems to take. If it's been 35 minutes, you can close the app and try to do the update on non-peak internet hours. If it takes more than 15 minutes, it probably is best to try at another time. Good luck. Have lived through this with 13 sets of lights and about 3 sets that I haven't been able to upgrade yet because it tests my patience every time.
