“Is this like any other bluetooth device (like a phone) where can I play a record and have the sound go to an external bluetooth speaker wirelessly? That is what I'm wanting to do with this but the description makes it unclear.”

No. You cannot. You can only SEND INTO the record player via Bluetooth to have music played on the built in speakers. This is such an unfortunate feature to be lacking. I have no interest in sending music via Bluetooth to these just ok speakers. But I would sure like to send the music from my records to better speakers wirelessly.
