“With some shows, there's an "echo" effect, also as if the TV (a new Vizio) was repeating the sound a moment later. For other shows, (or even other scenes within the same show), the sound is fine. (We're using the optical link.) Any ideas?”

This echo effect is a very common situation to happen when audio is traveling through both the TV speakers and the connected sound bar. When this happens, it is recommended to turn off your TV's internal speakers.
