The distance between outer stand legs is 41.42", they are not adjustable.

If the tv stand was made for 51 inch tv the no but normally tv stand range from like 45 inch to 55 inches

So, the legs are pretty much firmly locked in place and can't be adjusted; however, the feet are positioned far in enough to where they'll rest comfortably on a 50" TV stand. They might be sitting right next to each edge, but you should be alright.
