I was able to program my cable companies remote with zero issues. Best bet is call direct tv but I had no issues, it does come with a normal small remote, the tablet is just an extra thing to use.

Yes. In DirectV menu Settings-> Remote control -> setup the remote to work with your TV and/or Receiver for one remote control.
