From everything I can see and from what I was told by Vizio, the Ethernet is only used for firmware upgrades. All the "smarts" are in the tablet and all the data is cast to the TV from the tablet. I've tried different tablets and smartphones and nothing will work without the tablet or smartphone running the casting app and connected to the WiFi. Once the app stops, andriod is turned off, or WiFi disconnected, the playback stops. My performance is so bad over the WiFi, I'm considering returning the TV. The casting apps are also very buggy.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The monitor is just that, a monitor. It has zero functions other than displaying what it is given. The cast process is like this. 1st your android starts the stream, then it gives it to the TV, then the TV takes all the network traffic directly, nothing is going through the android. The only exception that I have found is Pandora, it seams to be streaming from the android to the TV. So start your program with the android, the TV takes over, then you can turn off the android.

To access apps on this display, you will Cast them from your paired iOS or Android smartphone or tablet. You can have the display connected to the internet wirelessly or with ethernet and be able to do this.
