So upon reading this I was actually curious myself so I did a little experiment. I went 150+ yards (450+feet) into the woods behind my house where I have a tree stand and called my moms cellphone. My house is brick and the receiver is in the middle of the home. The weather was clear and sunny and I was about 50 yards into the tree line. I jad crystal clear reception, no breakup, no static. While I cant say that the handset will reach 2000 feet I am convinced that it is possible, especially indoors.
