You have to push the parent monitor button in order to speak

There's only one "baby" unit and 2 "parent units so you can't monitor 2 different baby rooms. The "baby" unit stays plugged in one room but the "parent" units can be portable. I don't think you can make the parent units into open mike. You would have to push the Talk button to be heard.
