• Hi - The Vtech DS6101 is just an expansion handset. It requires a main telephone base model DS6151 to function. You may check the model VTech CS5119, which does not come with a built in answering machine. Thank you, -VTech Support

• This handset can only be used with a base station. The base does have voice mail, but I was able to turn it off.
