The drive itself should be very quiet. These larger (10+) drives contain helium or halogen, and not air. If it seems particularly noisy, it could be defective. The drives inside these retail external units are almost always grade-B at best drives the manufacturer is trying to off-load in a fashion where the buyer doesn't really have a good idea of which product they're getting under the hood. Caveat emptor.
