“Hi, I have a 2014 Macbook Air, and was told to get an external hard drive with a USB-A port. Would this work for me, and would it also work for a newer computer once I move on from the one I'm using? Thanks!”

Yes. For newer devices, you can always purchase USB-C adapters or cables for this external HDD as well.
