“I have an old Dell Centrino laptop with a 80gb hd and HD can be upgraded to larger HD. I was encrypting Windows as it stated and accidentally lock myself out. Not enough room to reinstall Windows. Can I switch it out and install the HD from this?”

I have not tried this. I just used this as my main storage.
