When installed to vent outside, the fan will expel air from the top vent also. No adjustments were necessary.

There are two solid plates included with the unit to replace the ones with holes that are used for recirculating mode. You install the two solid plates then reverse the third, so yes, you should make these adjustments when venting outside or most of your airflow out the vents will be lost. A little air still comes out the top, probably that’s how they cool the bulb.
