“I've hooked up all the connections and get surround from my DVD (which originally was hooked directly into the 4K TV) but found it would not generate sound so had to do a direct connection to the receiver. TV/Cable is not getting surround sound, why?”

Make sure the input from the TV to the receiver is set for surround. Each input on the receiver can be set differently.
