Not as comfortable as the Bose 700 but much more comfortable than the B&W PX7. Sound: 3/5 Where's the midrange? Vocals are severely lacking compared to Bose 700. While disproportionate to the mid range, The bass is strong but well controlled. (I did not try equalizing the sound.). More importantly as the lack of a sound stage. As a whole these headphones have the opposite sonic profile of open-back headphones, such as my gold-standard Sennheiser HD 580s. In the end I exchanged the for the Shure Aonic 50s, which have a more open, neutral, and fuller sound. Noise canceling: 3/5 Good at reducing external noise but not quite up to par with the Bose 700. It should be noted that the noise-canceling can exert a fair amount of ear pressure. My wife got totally freaked out by this and literally ripped these off of her head. Lastly, at the highest noise setting there's noticeable audible audio artifacts including very slight "crackling."

Almost great, but showing its age

If you’re not planning on wearing in crowded places or using multipoint much it’s still a great option.

Review of Sony Headphones

However, it is confusing at times to remember which way to swipe across the headphones to turn up the volume or switch songs. I’ve also noticed that the headphones will change from noise cancellation to ambient without me doing it and I don’t know if that’s a simple fix or if it’s something else.

Regarding the controls, for volume, swipe up repeatedly for louder and down repeatedly for quieter; for tracks, swipe forward for the next song and backward for the previous song. The automatic mode change is likely due to the Adaptive Sound Control or Speak-to-Chat features in the Sony | Headphones Connect app. Please open the app and disable both of those features to keep it locked on Noise Cancellation. If the issue continues after checking those settings, please reach out to our support team for further assistance. Thanks for choosing Sony.

Great and Not so Much

The sound quality is great, deep base with very clear vocals, and the ability to customize the equalizer to your liking is fantastic. What's not fantastic is the Tactile sensors, the microphone, and pressure build up from the noise cancelling. The sensors do not respond very well, often skipping what I was listening to and causing me to have to take my phone out and go back; defeats the purpose of the feature. The internal sensor works great but with the wonky touch sensors it ends up playing the sound or skipping the song/episode. The Microphone is horrible. It picks up all of the background noise and not your voice. The voice through feature seamed cool at the beginning but it became very annoying. Anything triggers it, a random sounds, other voices, loud noises, coughing, etc. It makes the experience unenjoyable. Lastly, the pressure. My god, it can be so intense sometimes. You feel it pushing into your head. The pressure can cause some headaches and sometimes a little disorientation, nausea, dizziness/motion sickness. Makes relaxing a bit difficult. I hope this helps you when deciding

While we're happy that you like the great sound and you're utilizing the built-in equalizer on the Sony Headphones Connect app, we're sorry to hear you're experiencing issues with the touch sensor control panel does not respond correctly. Make sure to update the software version of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance.
When you wear the headset over a cap, cloth, a scarf, hair, etc., wearing detection may not work properly, and the touch sensor control panel may not be available for operation. Wear the headset so that your ears are inside the earpads. We also recommend to clear the touch sensor so that you can tap the touch sensor directly. The WH-1000XM4 features Precise Voice Pickup technology, which will reduce background noise and delivers clearer voice quality to the other person on the phone. Depending on the surrounding environment, wind noise may increase when the Ambient Sound Mode is turned on. In that case, cancel the voice focus with the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app. If the wind noise is still significant, turn off the Ambient Sound Mode. For call quality, re-establish the connection between the headphones and your source device. Select HFP or HSP for the profile. You can also check the settings of the app that you are using for mic sensitivity if available.
Your feedback about the atmospheric pressure when active noise canceling is turn on is greatly appreciated. We are sorry, but the WH-1000XM4 doesn't offer a manual atmospheric pressure adjustment. However, it features an NC Optimizer - Optimizing the noise canceling function to suit the wearer. For details, please refer to the following Help Guide link:

They have swipe controls for volume, pausing, playing, and skipping songs. These controls work fine for the most part but can be annoying. The voice which lets you know when the battery is low and when it turns on/off is a little loud. It is also a little annoying to pair them with other devices because you need to turn it off and back on to do so. The noise cancelling and sound quality make these headphones worth the money, in my opinion. Far more comfortable and effective than others I have used.

Great at noise canceling, especially needed since I commute in public transportation. I always felt the bass on those were a bit too much but I could always change eq on my iPad. I finally decided to purchase the WH-1000XM4 headphones because I had heard a lot of good things. And they were not lying. They still have great noise canceling but the sound to me is more open and not too heavy on the bass. The app is also pretty cool. It's got a lot of features. I really dig these headphones and I'm very happy with dishing out over $300 for them.

I am very pleased with this product. My only critique involves the ear cup “fingertip” controls: they just aren’t as responsive consistently as I would like.
